Alex the Astronaut is a curious storyteller from Sydney who has released her debut single ‘Half of 21st Street’. Currently living in Long Island, NY on a Soccer scholarship while studying Math and Physics, Alex the Astronaut is driven by the unknown and the experiences of those around her.
‘Half of 21st Street’ was recorded with and produced by Benjamin McCarthy (Gordi, Kate Miller-Heidke) in Melbourne in January 2016 and follows the story of a postman and a thief who meet up after a night out by the water. Through rolling guitars, strings, synth and changing tempos, Alex the Astronaut tells us their story: it’s romantic love, it’s innocent, and it highlights those tiny moments of hope that appear in our lives when we least expect.
Driven by a love of music from a young age and some very encouraging figures along the way, Alex the Astronaut was given her first drum kit when she was 3 and from there she found herself falling down the musical rabbit hole. One thing that has always stood out as she discovers new artists along the way is honest storytelling through lyrics. This was evident to her from a young age, through listening to artists like the great Paul Kelly, whom she refers to as her formative influence, alongside Lily Allen and the late David Bowie. Three very different artists with a common thread: they only ever say it how they see it.

Growing up on a farm in Regional NSW, singer-songwriter Gordi, now a bone fide Sydney resident, writes music while squeezing in medicine studies at university. Surviving on a diverse musical diet including classic folk icons like Carole King, Paul Kelly and Joni Mitchell and their modern counterparts in The Tallest Man on Earth, Ásgeir and Laura Marling, the candour in Gordi’s music and vocal texture is at once fractured and brimming with richness, leaving new single “Nothing’s As It Seems” an effortlessly memorable tune, as much for the hooky melody as it is for its distinctive musical feel.

Super Duper worked closely alongside Gordi on the release of her single “Nothing’s As It Seems”, focusing on digital media. The track was praised across the board and subsequently added to triple j rotation.

Melbourne-based contemporary indie-pop guitarist and singer Kate Martin has released her new single ’Kintsukuroi’, taken from her forthcoming LP Set My Life To Fire due out this Autumn.

Kintsukuroi is the name of the Japanese art for “golden repair,” where shattered ceramics mended with gold are perceived as being more beautiful for having been broken – a concept that Kate Martin interprets as a metaphor for the human condition. On ’Kintsukuroi’, a tapestry of multi-layered guitar loops in Kate Martin’s signature finger-picking style is blended with Tabla percussion and textures. Pulling from an Eastern influence, this lends to an atmosphere that is at once contemporary and timeless.

After the release of her second studio album Hand Me My Bow And Arrow (2012), Townsville native Kate Martin relocated to Melbourne to commence writing her third full-length, expanding on an already impressive output for artist of only 24 years of age. The move to an unfamiliar city meant moments of isolation but also creative solace, an opportunity to retreat creatively and grow as both an artist and an individual. ’Kintsukuroi’ is the first taste of new music from these sessions and is taken from her forthcoming LP, due Autumn 2016.

After dropping a few hints here and there, The Living End are stoked to announce they are performing 3 very special shows in the general NSW area this October and November because, well, they bloody feel like it. The Living End fans in Canberra, Wollongong and Sydney will be treated to very intimate, loud live shows featuring all of their biggest hits.

These are The Living End’s first headline shows since the unprecedented Retrospective Tour in December 2012, where they performed each of their six albums in full over seven nights in five cities across the country, with an enormous 11-show streak at the Corner Hotel in Melbourne, breaking the venue’s record. The Living End stopped press in January this year after they were announced as last minute headliners on Soundwave 2014, performing their highly anticipated sets to raucous crowds at each stop.

Even though the Melbourne-born band have now moved out of home, vocalist and guitarist Chris Cheney to Los Angeles, drummer Andy Strachan to coastal Victoria and double-bassist Scott Owen to Northern NSW, The Living End have circled back together in spectacular fashion to start writing album #7, the follow-up to 2011’s ARIA Award winning The Ending Is Just The Beginning Repeating, currently due out in 2015.
